Amazon Kindle 2022 Review: The Perfect No-Nonsense E-Reader!
When it comes to buying an e-reader, most buyers don’t look past the Kindle—and for good reason. Amazon has perfected every aspect of ereading, from glare-free displays to integrated dictionaries and Goodreads compatibility. Kindle gives you everything you want in an e-reader and then some. Over the years, Amazon has expanded its Kindle line with other premium products such as the Kindle Oasis and Signature, but the Paperwhite has been the best choice for readers.
Amazon also releases a “budget” Kindle that typically lacks some of the Paperwhite’s features, but comes at an affordable price. The latest in this budget series is the Kindle 2022, which was released in October last year. It is currently available at a price of Rs 9,999, while the Paperwhite costs Rs 13,999. We’ve been using the new Kindle 2022 for over a week and were impressed with how well it bridges the gap between the entry-level device and the flagship Paperwhite. In this review, we’ll go over what the Kindle 2022 gets right, what it lacks, and whether you should get it over the more expensive Paperwhite.

Kindle 2022 review: Design and display
The Kindle 2022 comes in a sleek rectangular case that’s made from wood fiber-based materials sourced from responsibly managed forests or recycled sources (you expect your Kindle to be eco-friendly). Inside the box you will find your Kindle device, USB Type-A to C charging cable, user manual and product brochure. Amazon did not bundle a power adapter with the Kindle.

The device retains the 6-inch display from its 2019 predecessor, but the resolution has been bumped up to 300 ppi, bringing the entry-level Kindle on par with the Paperwhite and Oasis. It’s still the most compact Kindle on the market, sitting below the Paperwhite’s 6.8-inch display. If you’re looking for an e-reader that you can take with you on the go, this is the ideal Kindle product.
The body surrounding the display is made of polycarbonate, which is significantly cheaper than the Paperwhite. The chin is embossed with “kindle” and is quite chunky and doubles as a thumb rest. The notification light, USB port and power switch are located at the bottom. The new Kindle comes in two colors – Denim and Black. We used the former for this review. The Denim device contains 30% recycled plastic, while the black variant uses 75% recycled plastic.
The new Kindle is not waterproof. This is one of the features that Amazon reserves for the Paperwhite and other premium Kindles. If you like to use your Kindle to read in the bath, decent IP coverage should be a non-negotiable. In that case, go for the Paperwhite. The Kindle 2022 also has 4 LEDs compared to the Paperwhite’s 17. While this doesn’t make much of a difference in terms of screen lighting, you do lose out on color temperature options.
Kindle 2022 Review: Performance
First, the 300 ppi resolution on the new Kindle’s display makes a world of difference. This is the resolution offered by Amazon on all Kindles across the board. Text quality and clarity are impeccable and it doesn’t get any better. The 4 LEDs on offer do a decent job of lighting up the display in low light conditions, and you can use the toolbar to adjust the brightness when natural lighting is optimal. As mentioned earlier, you can’t adjust the color temperature on the entry-level Kindle.
Amazon has also doubled the internal storage to 16GB, meaning you can basically carry thousands of books wherever you go. With a Kindle Unlimited subscription, you get access to over 2 million titles. You can also send any files in Kindle-supported formats directly to the device using email or the smartphone app.
Amazon claims that the battery on the Kindle is good enough to last up to six weeks with moderate use. While we didn’t use the device long enough to test it, battery life was in line with what Amazon claims. After over a week of use, the battery only dropped ~20%. The USB-C port also allows for faster charging.
The reading experience on the Kindle was exemplary. The compactness of the device makes it easy to hold and you can work for hours without having to rest your hands. The large chin offers useful support for your palm or thumb, depending on how you hold the Kindle. Pages load fairly quickly when reading a book, but the browsing software could have been a bit smoother. The anti-glare display with electronic ink is gentle on the eyes and allows you to read for hours without feeling eye strain.
Speaking of software, the new Kindle comes with some interesting and super useful features. It gets Bluetooth connectivity, which means you can pair it with an audio system or TWS and listen to audiobooks easily. The accessibility options also include VoiceView Screen Reader, which is basically a text-to-speech feature that reads text on the screen. This is useful for people with limited vision or other visual impairments. There’s also a dedicated tab for Goodreads, along with a web browser.

Statement
Priced at Rs 9,999, the Kindle 2022 is a device we’d recommend to those looking for a no-nonsense e-reader that gets the basic features right without adding extra frills to the price. Its compactness and light weight also make this Kindle more convenient to carry on the go. Amazon has done a great job of bridging the feature gap between this entry-level Kindle and the Paperwhite. The lack of water resistance may bother some, but we think it’s a fair trade-off given the price and the fact that most readers don’t use their Kindles in places where there’s a risk of splashing water. However, if you’re a voracious reader, we recommend going with the Paperwhite.
